About
My research interests centre around the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems(GIS) for international development purposes. I am particularly interested in using remotely sensed environmental metrics for estimating socioeconomic conditions.
My PhD aimed to explore the spatial associations between socioeconomic variables derived from a subset of the 2001 Indian National Census and environmental metrics derived from remotely sensed satellite sensor data.
Past studies found non-causative associations between land and poverty, however these studies are usually focussed on small areas using ground based studies. My research explored the associations between socioeconomic variables and environmental metrics on an extensive spatial scale, covering over 14000 villages in Assam north-east India.
If associations can be found it may be possible to monitor poverty and socioeconomic conditions using finer spatial and temporal datasets than the current ground based census and sample surveys.
Recent research with Dr. Jadu Dash has been validating the MTCI vegetation index and working towards developing new vegetation indices for the forthcoming Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites.
