Lecturer in mental health
About
I am currently a lecturer in mental health. I am an experienced registered mental health nurse with longstanding specific interests in Dementia and managing violence & aggression.
Lately, my interests have also come to include the use of transformative learning and theatrical/drama methods to enhance the student learning experience in the classroom. I have particular interests in Theatre of the oppressed specifically the use of forum theatre in education.
I offer award winning learning and teaching expertise across the range of social science topics in medicine and health care. Since 2005, I’ve successfully led or participated in bringing a variety of innovative and emancipatory methods of teaching and learning into a range of settings. This has included extensive experimentation with theatre and drama techniques and in 2009 the methods were recognised with a vice chancellors teaching award for excellence. Building on this success we have a faculty-based consultancy which so far has delivered highly evaluated bespoke productions. I also have the privilege of working with a mental health service user network theatre group as an artistic director.
I am in the early stages of working towards my PhD part-time and my research area is exploring if using a forum theatre approach compliments the transformative learning philosophy.
