About

With a background in physiotherapy and PhD in Neuromuscular Physiology, my current research interests are in musculoskeletal function in health, disease and ageing.
Themes include:
1) Healthy musculoskeletal function (across the activity spectrum from elite sporting to inactive individuals), and mechanisms of movement dysfunction and recovery (involving biomechanics of movement and physiology of motor control)
2) Prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions to enable active living, and maintain physical independence for as long as possible in later life
3) Development and application of health technologies to aid research, clinical assessment and effectiveness of rehabilitation, with a particular interest in rehabilitative ultrasound imaging of muscle (RUSI) for evaluation and biofeedback of muscle function

A key feature of my research is multidisciplinary collaboration with experts in engineering sciences, physiology, sports science and various medical and allied health specialties including: physiotherapy, rheumatology, epidemiology, occupational therapy, orthopaedic surgery, primary care medicine and podiatry.

Much of this work involves experimental methodological and physiological studies that underpin more clinically applied research, evaluating health technologies and treatments in clinical trials. Conditions include back, hip, knee, shoulder and hand dysfunction.

Current projects include funding from:  Arthritis Research UK, the Engineering Sciences & Physical Research Council (EPSRC), National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Efficacy, Mechanisms and Effectiveness (EME) Scheme, Elite Sports Performance Research in Training (ESPRIT) Consortium (EPSRC), and PhD studentships supported by: Ion Medical Solutions, Vicon (Oxford) Ltd, DuPuy (a Johnson & Johnson company), NIHR, Ghana Education Trust Fund.
