About
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at Southampton. I work on the evolution of modern human diversity.
I currently teach the method and theory behind the study of human skeletal remains, osteological techniques and palaeopathology at both undergraduate and Masters level.
My research interests lie in human variation. I am therefore interested in what it is that makes us human and how that might be expressed skeletally. I therefore research biological aspects of identity and ethnicity within ancient Egyptian populations and in medieval Islamic populations from Spain.
My other research interests include the use of stable isotopes to determine diet and radiogenic isotopes and trace elements to identify migration and mobility. This has primarily focused upon the Nile Valley and Andalucia.
I am currently writing two books: one with Andrew Shortland and Joanne Rowland details the potential use of archaeological science within Egyptian archaeology, and the second explores biological aspects of Egyptian identity (such as ethnicity, diet, mobility and childhood).
