About
I hold a BA in Film and English and a MA in Film Studies from the University of Southampton where I am currently studying for a PhD in Film, part-time.
The representation of Hispanic masculinity in contemporary Hollywood cinema is the subject of my doctoral thesis, which considers how popular genre conventions can reconfigure traditional conceptions of race, gender and sexuality within mainstream cinema.
My MA dissertation entitled 'The Borders of US and Mexican masculinity in Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi Trilogy' considered how the Mexican American filmmaker employed a transnational pastiche of popular masculine genres in his portrayal of the Mexican action hero El Mariachi.
I have organised a postgraduate seminar series examining the biopic as a 21st century film and television genre, and have programmed a series of film screenings showcasing the research of Film PhD candidates at the University of Southampton.
In 2011 I have organised a postgraduate conference on the theme of Masculinity and Popular Culture, sponsored by the ADM-HEA and MeCCSA-PGN, that took place in March at the University of Southampton. A selection of papers from this conference has been published as a special edition of the MeCCSA-PGN journal Networking Knowledge.
I have also worked as a PTHP Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton.
I have previously served as Outreach Officer for the MeCCSA-PGN and for the 2011-2012 will take on the new role of Training Officer. I am also currently the graduate student representative for the SCMS Latino/a Caucus.
